Remember when basic television stations would fight for your attention on Saturday mornings, I do. I remember when ABC, FOX and WB would show a Saturday Morning cartoon preview show the night before and being super excited to catch the new shit the next day. But now, nothing and I mean nothing good is on anymore. WB Kids was the last one to skip town on decent Saturday morning programming. Now every basic fuckin station’s cartoons suck its either some redundant cheesy ass amine kids show i.e. Yu-Gi-Oh, Chaotic, Di-Gata Defenders, Dinosaur King or some pre-school baby shit, I’m talking to you Dora, what up wit dat! So in memory of the great Saturday morning cartoon and a hopeful chance some station manager might see this, the top 5 Saturday morning cartoons when I was growing up.
5) The Pirate of Dark Water
This was a show that was slept on by everyone. I remember being the only kid who talked about the show on Monday in school. Great premise and animation but it didn’t survive very long.
4) The Tick
Growing up, almost anything my dad liked, I liked. The Tick was one of those shows that I didn’t have to understand the jokes as long as my dad laughed, I laughed. It wasn’t until I was older that I began to understand the humor of the show for myself and appreciate how so ahead of its time it was.
3) Dragonball Z
I remember stumbling across Dragonball Z on accident. I wanted to record something but set the timer an hour early to find this magnificent show. This was before Cartoon Network and Funimation when Ocean Group had the licensing rights and where showing it on syndicated television. I would get pissed because it never got passed the episodes when Goku would begin to fight the Ginyu Force. It took almost 3 years for me to see the rest of those fights. Well worth it though.
2) Batman/Superman Adventures
When I started losing interest in FOX Saturday morning, the WB was the next best thing. My favorite show was Batman/Superman Adventures. In the beginning they would spilt episodes; one Saturday it would be a Batman episode, the next would be Superman. Then they started changing the format by having both of them on at the same time. This show was also the pre-curser to some other favorites, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
1) X-MEN
This show was the only show my mom would ever let me slide on when it came to doing anything. I didn’t have to take out the garbage, make my bed, wash my ass, nothing! She knew how important this show was to me, she even schedule a portrait session around my X-Men viewing timetable and you know how moms are about getting photos of their babies. I loved this show with all my heart until it started getting slopping with the animation and dialogue. Still my favorite of show of all-time.

Mad' and Rile' Papa here.Yes! I used to watch Pirates of Dark Waters with my daughters and we would imitate the characters especially the way Captain Blod(?) would say, "Monkeybird". Dre, you're right a great sleeper.
